That Instagram reel of someoneâs perfectly curated art studio took your breath away⌠and not in the good way.
Iâve definitely felt that feeling. When that artist you follow seems to be booking endless work while youâre still struggling to see how far youâve come.
It made my heart sink a little deeper â and itâs because of me, not them.
Sweet friend, if youâve ever felt the heavy weight of comparison crushing your creative spirit, youâre oh-so-not alone.
When comparison kills creativity, it affects your whole relationship with self-expression. As artists, weâre naturally sensitive souls. We feel things deeply, and sometimes that includes the ache of measuring our creative journey against othersâ.
This comparison kills creativity meaning fundamentally changes how we approach our art. Weâre trying to paint a sunset while constantly looking over our shoulder at someone elseâs canvas. Weâre missing those beautiful colors unfolding right in front of us, following us on our artistic journey.
Your creative path is as unique as a snowflake (I type in December in South Carolina, with holiday movies on in the background knowing that Iâll probably never see snow out my window. đ) Trying to follow someone elseâs footsteps only leads you away from your own beautiful journey. â¨
So letâs talk about the elusive cost of creative comparison â and how we can work to combat it.

The way comparison kills creativity is often subtle, starting with small moments of self-doubt.
Every time you spiral into comparison, youâre spending precious creative energy that could be poured into your art. But âhey, just stop comparing yourself!â isnât really the advice that helps any of us. đ
That moment when youâre just about to start creating, and suddenly your mind whispers, âBut look at what theyâre making/doing? My life isnât nearly as good.â
Creative blocks from comparison often manifest as both perfectionism and procrastination.
This self-doubt doesnât just affect your confidence â it literally changes how your brain processes creativity. Instead of flowing freely with your ideas, you start second-guessing every artistic choice. Should your brushstrokes be more like theirs? Should your music have that same sound? Should your writing follow their style?
The real tragedy is that some of the most beautiful art never makes it into the world because comparison convinced the artist it wasnât âgood enough.â

Our social media feeds have become galleries of perfectly curated moments. But theyâre showing us the highlight reel without the behind-the-scenes footage.

Social media comparison anxiety can drain your creative energy before you even begin.
This is exactly how comparison kills creativity: by making us focus on others instead of our own unique journey. That artist who seems to be cranking out masterpieces weekly isnât showing you the dozens of scrapped attempts, the late-night doubts, or the years of practice that came before.
You need to remember that social media is like a museum where everyoneâs displaying their best work under perfect lighting. Real creativity happens in the messy studio, in the quiet moments, in the imperfect attempts that teach us something new.
Many artists also donât realize that comparison kills creativity until theyâve lost touch with their authentic voice.
Thereâs a delicate line between being inspired by others and losing yourself in comparison. Being inspired feels like a spark of possibility â âOh, I could try something like that in my own way!â Comparison feels like a heavy weight â âIâll never be as good as them.â

But how does comparison kill creativity? Exactly this â by making us doubt our natural artistic instincts and unique perspective.
Letâs talk about something magical that changed my entire approach to creativity: the concept of Second Circle energy, developed by renowned acting teacher Patsy Rodenberg.
But before we go into that, letâs get to the bottom of the other circles you might be in: First Circle and Third Circle.
First Circle is when all your energy is pulled inward.
Youâre overthinking every detail, drowning in self-doubt, and so focused on your own insecurities that you canât connect with your creative flow. To overcome creative comparison, we need to recognize when weâre stuck in this energy.
Signs youâre in First Circle:
(đââď¸Raise your hand if you feel like youâre in First Circle right now.)
Third Circle is when your creative energy scatters outward, losing its authenticity in an attempt to impress or perform for others.
This is where comparison can push us â specifically, into creating what we think others want to see rather than what genuinely moves us. Itâs the space of trying too hard, of forcing creativity rather than letting it flow naturally.
Signs youâre in Third Circle:
(đââď¸Sound familiar? Weâve all been there, chasing the algorithm instead of our authentic voice.)
Second Circle is the magic zone â where youâre fully present with your creativity, connected to your authentic voice, and in flow with your artistic process. Learning to stop comparing yourself to others becomes natural when youâre in this space!
In Second Circle:

Letâs turn this magical understanding into practical action. Hereâs how to reclaim your creative power from the comparison trap.
Make it a ritual: create something â anything! â before you look at other peopleâs work. Treat yourself as a creator/creative over a consumer.
Start keeping a record of your own artistic evolution. Take photos of your works in progress, save your early attempts, write about your creative process.
Look back on your work and embrace the cringe!
Itâs about creating creating creating, remembering that youâre on your own beautiful journey. I heard something from Elise Darma â instead of ABC being âAlways Be Closing,â she says âAlways Be Creating.â And I love it!
Thereâs a reason why people love Chappel Roan â they love seeing her transformation. Embrace your own transformation. Dare to create and hate it a month later.
Developing your unique creative voice becomes possible when you stop measuring yourself against others. More importantly, itâs about tracking metrics youâre actually in control of.
You canât control how many gigs/jobs/sales you get. You canât control how many followers you have. You canât control how many views you get or how many people come to your show. Instead, create your own markers of progress that you can control.
The numbers of days you create. The amount of jobs/auditions you apply to and audition for.
Just like nature, creativity moves in seasons.
Sometimes youâre in a spring of new ideas, sometimes a summer of abundant creation, sometimes a fall of reflection, or a winter of rest.
None of these seasons are wrong â theyâre all essential parts of the creative cycle.
Honoring your current season instead of comparing it to someone elseâs can help you allow your creativity to flow naturally.
